Hawser : A large rope made of three strands each containing many yarns.
Hawser-laid : Made in the manner of a hawser. Cf. Cable-laid, and see Illust. of Cordage.
Hawthorn : A thorny shrub or tree (the Crataegus oxyacantha), having deeply lobed, shining leaves, small, roselike, fragrant flowers, and a fruit called haw. It is much used in Europe for hedges, and for standards in gardens. The American hawthorn is Crataegus cordata, which has the leaves but little lobed.
Hay : A hedge. ;; A net set around the haunt of an animal, especially of a rabbit. ;; To lay snares for rabbits. ;; Grass cut and cured for fodder. ;; To cut and cure grass for hay.
Haybird : The European spotted flycatcher. ;; The European blackcap.
Haybote : An allowance of wood to a tenant for repairing his hedges or fences; hedgebote. See Bote.
Haycock : A conical pile or hear of hay in the field.
Hay-cutter : A machine in which hay is chopped short, as fodder for cattle.
Haye : The Egyptian asp or cobra (Naja haje.) It is related to the cobra of India, and like the latter has the power of inflating its neck into a hood. Its bite is very venomous. It is supposed to be the snake by means of whose bite Cleopatra committed suicide, and hence is sometimes called Cleopatra's snake or asp. See Asp.
Hayfield : A field where grass for hay has been cut; a meadow.
